I called 3 different companies from a google search for auto warranties. All 3 were found on page one. I was looking to purchase an extended service contract for my 2010 Acura RL with 15,000 miles. Give or take a few dollars, all three were all around $3,200 for exclusionary (bumper to bumper) coverage for 6 years or 100,000 miles. They immediately began to tell me about their financing arrangements…put X down and 18 payments of X.
Now I have to be honest, I wasn’t looking for a service contract. I happen to own ABRAXAS WARRANTY, and I was doing a little undercover work.
Back to the scenario. I told all 3 that even though they have financing arrangements, it was a bit too steep for me right now, with Christmas, the economy, etc. Before I could finish my sentence, one dropped the price, “just for me”, to $2,600. The other two were not that far behind in the price. Once again I said it was too much. One went down to $2400, the others didn’t budge. However, one did send me a coupon via email for a “special” additional $200 off the price I was quoted.
So what is the “non-negotiable” price for MY car using: ABRAXAS WARRANTY? $1352. Quite a stretch from the others. I guess when you have to market using Dale Earnhardt Jr’s or Rusty Wallace’s name it costs a lot more. Or just hungry commissioned sales people. We’re talking over $1,000 from their best price! We did this with 4 other makes/models/years/mileage and came up with similar results on all.
When I told them I had found it for a significantly lower price elsewhere they told me that 1) the company offering this price could not possibly be backed by reliable insurance, 2) the coverage had to be much lower, and 3) the administrator had to be second rate and would not pay claims.
